My last post about Lagerfeld Confidential was what the French would call "faire une tartine". I wish I could say that this refers to some mouth watering pastry, but in fact it actually describes a written work that is really....really long. So in the spirit of mixing things up, I have decided to keep this post brief. Because, in the words of a witty line I read in Eat, Pray, Love this morning, "the next time you feel the need to cry about spilled milk, make sure it's condensed, will ya?"

So here are my August Picks of the Month for Vancouver:

Restaurant: Hapa Izakaya

Delicious Japanese fusion tapas, refreshing sakke served out of a hollowed bamboo trunk and a funky, friendly atmosphere make this a great restaurant to meet up with friends.

Shop: Blo Blow Dry Bar

For those days when that dread bed head will not be silenced and a ponnytail will not suffice, the glamourotti flock to Blo to get their mane tamed, straightened and twisted into a chignon just in time for that dinner, date or charity ball.

Activity: Rollerblading in Stanley Park

Rent rollerblades from one of the many shops on Denman Street (just off Georgia Street) and blade all the way around the beautiful, breezy seawall of nearby Stanley Park. Great fun with girlfriends, boyfriends and families, a trip along the seawall is also enjoyable on foot or bike.

ALL HAIL KARL THE GREAT

Once upon a time last Fall I heard whispers of a new documentary about to hit the international fashion circuit. A film so unique in that it would follow the private day to day activities of the 21st century's most illustrious fashion designer in a way the has never been revealed to the public before. Of course, this God-like, larger than life King of the fashion world in none other than Karl Lagerfeld, the documentary appropriately being titled Lagerfeld Confidential.

Director Rodolphe Marconi has spent the past two years trailing Mr. Lagerfeld through the daily n'importe quoi's of his business, personal and public life, giving viewers a rare glimse into the unique workings of a genius's brain. Hopefully Marconi will be able to shed some light on how this veritable renaissance man is capable of creating more that 6 collections annually for Chanel alone, as well as several for Fendi and his own Lagerfeld Gallery Line, yet manage to find time to work on his photography artwork, create mixed CDs and design for various fashion and luxury firms that solicit his creative talents for special products (think H&M, Dom Perignon, Colette).

Anyone who is interested in catching a glimpse can visit the film`s MySpace page, which has a series of wonderful clips and trailers from the movie. As I have mentioned in my writing before, I am a big fan of people who have a unique worldview and who have no problem giving their opinions, regardless of how others may react. Instead of telling people what they want to hear, they speak the truth, and do I ever get excited when people express these simple, undeniable truths. They make me feel as though a weight that has been created by the heavy, false illusions of society has finally been removed. Needless to say, Kaiser Karl is a big fan of speaking his wise mind and reveals his wisdom throughout the film, transforming from artist to unexpected guru. In even better news, this food for the stylish soul is almost entirely shown in the clips on MySpace, so one doesn`t need to hunt down the film to take in Karl`s personal mantras.

After watching the trailer I was as eager to see this film as a small child is on Christmas morning; however, a full copy of the documentary was nowhere to be found. Surely it must be available somewhere. Step 1) google it. This took me to the official website of the video where one can purchase the DVD. But fashion has never been a huge believer in Canada and decided that a copy cannot be purchased and sent there. Step 2) Amazon.com. Sorry, but your request is not available. Shoot! Step 3) Search the web relentlessly until a copy pops up on some blog or movie site that I can watch online. No such luck...

Still, I`m not one to give up when I put my mind to something, so I would periodically search the internet for the film over the cold months that followed. One unexpected evening in May I finally stumbled upon my diamond in the rough...in five parts, all complete with Japanese subtitles. Immediately I started to watch the live-stream download with a degree of focus usually reserved for exam writing and shoe shopping. I had waited for and anticipated the brilliance of this film for too long not to give it my full attention.

Yet somehow - quelle horreur! - I find my thoughts wondering...wondering over to the Teen Vogue website which I have opened unawares in a new browser. The sound of Lagerfeld's voice lingers in the background, but now feels most distant. Could I actually be bored? After I waited so long to be let in to the secret world of King Karl? Maybe this was just the typical reaction for any movie where the anticipation builds over such a long period that my expectations reach higher than the Eiffel Tower, impossible to be met. But at the same time I was more excited for the long-awaited Sex and the City Movie than a Miu Miu sample sale yet was gleefully jumping out of my seat from the second I heard Carrie's familiar telltale voice to long after the credits began to roll. So is it actually possible that this film was a wee-bit overated? I guess my opinion by the end of the film was that all the best parts, Karl's wise and opinionated musings, had aleady been shown in the trailer and clips I had seen months beforehand - a common trap of the film industry. Perhaps it was also that my French isn't exactly up to snuff and maybe the slight language barrier prevented me from getting the entire meaning of what was happening in the various scenes.

So all in all, Lagerfeld Confidential wasn't a bad film. In fact it was quite nice. It would be particularly enjoyed by someone who has seen little Lagerfeld footage in the past. To more seasoned Karl-o-philes, there is not that much new to see. As the French would put it, the footage is lacking a certain je ne sais quoi. Nevertheless, I would still recommend the film to fellow fashioniastas if they can get their Tiffany-laden hands on a copy. It is not however worth going out of one's way to find.

Restaurant: Dundarave Fish Market

Recently, thanks to years of set menu meals in Europe, I have become of the opinion that there really are no restaurants, outside the sushi circuit, serving both great food and providing great value in Vancouver. As the city rises in status on the international scene, so do its prices. However there remain a few culinary gems that for now are dominated mainly by a faithful posse of locals.

My favourite place is a West Coast fusion seafood restaurant located in quaint Dundarave, a trendy neighbourhood in West Vancouver. The Dundarave Fish Market boasts an original, to-die-for menu with items such as smoked black cod risotto, cedar plank salmon, Cajun snapper burgers, mussels a la Provencal, candied pecan scallop salad (amazing!), and its uber popular crab cakes. Considered the it-place among West Vancouverites, the restaurant sticks to its seafood theme with hip marine decor and a funky nautical martini list. It even has a lovely sun-soaked patio where customers can chat over a glass of cool sangria while working on their tans. My favourite dishes are the rip-tide squid, tug boat lettuce wrap and famed halibut fish n’ chips.

The Dundarave Fish Market is a great place for out-of-towners to get the true West Coast foodie experience. To be guaranteed a spot, make a reservation on their website because, as a friend once said, the only bad thing about the Dundarave Fish Market is not being able to get a table.

It may be true that old Beijing is rapidly disappearing; however, a few traditional pockets still remain throughout the modern city that evoke its old Chinese charm – these are the Hutongs. The Hutongs are the traditional style of housing in Beijing, consisting of narrow little streets lined with doors and high walls that conceal courtyard style homes that house entire extended families. They may look rustic from the outside, but inside they are each a private oasis.

Through hotelworld.com I booked the most fabulous hostel I have probably ever stayed at on any of my globetrotting adventures. Situated in a centrally located but hard to find area near the Forbidden City (get directions written in Chinese before arriving), Sitting on the Walls is a beautifully renovated brand new hostel oozing with feng shui and a friendly atmosphere. It is very clean, it is run by ridiculously friendly and helpful staff, attracts a nice crowd of people, serves great food, doesn’t get too rowdy, and is home to a really adorable little pooch. Most of all it just looks super cool! They have very affordable dorm style rooms with bunk beds and private double bed accommodation at a slightly higher price. All rooms have an ensuite bathroom, with a western toilet I may add, which is somewhat of a luxury in China. Just remember, you came to Beijing to see the city, not to hang around your ultra magnifico hostel, so do force yourself to venture out from this peaceful abode for at least a few hours each day.

Thanks to the eternally grumpy Anthony Bourdain I discovered this trendy but cheap Chinese restaurant. Due to to my horrendous directions I nearly gave up on ever finding this eccentric noodle house extraordinaire, but I’m glad my persistence paid off and I got to experience the 30 ft noodle myself. Sit back, relax and watch the chefs in the open kitchen (bottom floor) make your noodle-y dishes with big knives, chopsticks and wild arm movements. From the looks of it, I bet it all tastes good. I ordered and loved the 30 ft long noodle with a spicy aubergine sauce and the caramel covered sweet potatoes (so delish if you have a major sweet tooth – dip in accompanied water dish before eating to cool). Not to be left out, the servers were nice and the food arrived quickly. Three thumbs up!

I have a theory that travel is most enjoyable when you get to pair each cultural visit of the day with a little nibble of local cuisine or a break at a nice cafe. In my family we call this the “un chateau, un gateau” principle. Besides, it helps prevent that bothersome sore feet syndrome that seems to creep up on tourists. On one such afternoon in Beijing, after visiting both the Lama Temple and the Confucius temple, my friend and I decided that no trip to China would be complete without experiencing an authentic Chinese tea ceremony. We chose the Confucius Teahouse across the street from the Confucius Temple, aka the best, most serene tea place in town, for our little repose. Served by a gracious young girl, we were taken through the steps of the ceremony and got to drink to two delicate green teas that we had selected beforehand. They also serve funny little traditional cakes to enjoy with your tea and, drum roll please, they have a really nice western toilet. Last but not least, the teahouse isn’t very pricey. It is a great place to seek refuge from the bustling city outside and a must-stop on your itinerary.

Culture: Around Beijing

This is my list of must-see attractions in Beijing that every first-time tourist here should see. The Forbidden city, the Great Wall, Lama Temple, Confucius Temple, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Jingshan Park and Beihan Park. If you are looking to buy anything, visit the Pearl Market and don’t forget to bargain. You should never have to pay more than 25% of the initial offered price. Zaichien! (Goodbye!)

PICKS OF THE MONTH: CHINA Edition Part 1

TOWN: YANGSHUO

Yangshuo is a lovely little town in Southern China with some of the most extraordinary scenery I have ever seen. It is the China of yesteryear that we have dreamt about, with classic styled buildings, farmers picking rice, bamboo rafts floating down river and lush green limestone hills shooting out of the ground as far as the eye can see. It is part of the old world China that is quickly being replaced with 6 lane highways and skyscrapers. Allow yourself the pleasure of visiting this special place before it disappears.

Sightseeing: Hike and take a Li River cruise

It’s time to get up close and personal. Yangshuo is one of the most beautiful scenic spots in the world so what better way to see it than on foot. Hike up its most famous limestone mountain, half-moon peak, to get a great view of the landscape and to work off that extra serving of sweet and sour pork you took when no one was watching. And if you are lucky, and I can pretty much guarantee that you will be, a sweet and very enthusiastic Chinese woman will insist on leading you up the hill, carrying chilled drinks and a fan to keep you cool. She won’t take no for an answer so go with the flow and give her a few Yuan for her troubles at the end. It’s all part of the experience.

Another great way to experience the limestone peaks is on a relaxing cruise along the Li River on a traditional bamboo raft. It is a great way to lose the horde of tourists in town and you to enjoy the serene peacefulness of the limestone backdrop against the calm river. You will never want to leave the magical place!

Shopping: Explore the many shops on West Street and the nearby market by the Li River

When you booked your trip to China everyone you know and their grandmother probably supplied you with a list of must-have items to bring back that they just had to have. Although Yangshuo is no big city, its stores sell almost anything you will be looking to buy. From silk, to leather goods, hello kitty cell phone accessories, chopstick sets and (I hate to encourage this but whatever) knock-off everything; you can buy it all here and for the same price as in any market in China. There are lots of little shops along this street, which comes to a crescendo in the evening. Just don’t forget to bargain, bargain, bargain! Although they may not look it, shopkeepers will respect you for it. Don’t pay more than a quarter of the starting price they give you and be nice but firm. And remember, if they can profitably sell it to you at your price, they will. It’s like playing a game – have fun!

Now you say that you are more than happy eat Chinese food and shop all night long as your evening entertainment. After all, you are on vacation...it doesn’t count, right? You might even make brief appearance at the karaoke bar down the street. But did you know that there is a first class outdoor performance just on the other side of town. More specifically, it is a music, singing, dancing and lights show performed on water with the cascading hills lit up in the background. Created by the same man that is putting together the production of the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing this August, this show took over 5 years to produce and has a cast of thousands. Like nothing you will have seen before, it will leave you amazed and exhilarated. Believe it.

After an afternoon of shopping or a big lunch it is nice to seek refuge in a calm, cozy coffee shop. My favourite is Sanpin Coffee on the main shopping street. They have a large selection of teas and coffee (I like the milky jasmine green tea), comfy chairs, friendly staff, internet access and, luxury of luxuries, a western toilet upstairs!

Restaurant: Try local cuisine in small side street restaurants

I have no specific recommendation for where to dine but I would suggest avoiding the larger, hipper looking places lining the main street and try a simpler looking restaurant on a side street instead. It might not look like much but the food will be authentic, better quality, dirt cheap and absolutely delicious - a real Chinese experience. If you are unsure, ask a local where to go.

CITY GUEST STAR - LAS VEGAS

When in Vegas it is a must to walk through the main hotels on the Strip and critique their modern-day renditions of foreign cities and ancient civilizations. And so I did. Two hotels stood out because, rather than base their design on an imitation of something already existent, they went with something new and spared no expense to create it. There is no faux marble; there are no talking statues, no plastic columns. These two luxurious oases are the Wynn and the Bellagio. Since the Bellagio has had its fair share of exposure already, I would recommend staying at the Wynn if your pocket book will allow. It is at the end of the strip, across the street from the Venetian and Fashion Show Mall and is much concealed by its sleek, dark exterior. Inside it is fresh and airy, filled with elegant boutiques and a more sophisticated clientele (you have to be 21 or accompanied by an adult just to enter the hotel). On a nice day, have lunch or dinner on the outdoor patio of one of its restaurants situated on the edge of a hidden, exotic lagoon – a tranquil escape from the ringing of slot machines and the tipsy cacophony of the barely legal.

A good steak should be blood red, tender, a great cut and of the best quality. Now combine that with the biggest steak you’ve ever seen x2, and that is what you will find at Gallagher’s. A tasteful and friendly white-cloth restaurant located in New York, New York, Gallagher’s has some of the best, and definitely the biggest, steak in town. So for all you carnivores out there, it is definitely worth saving your stomach space all day to make way for this delicious meal. And don’t forget to make a reservation because the word is out.

The days of cheesy shows and tacky singers in Vegas are très over. There is no way you can witness the acrobats and performers of Cirque de Soleil and not be blown away. Everyone needs to see a show of theirs at least once. I have never been a huge Beatles enthusiast but this production left me aching for my iTunes, wanting to hear more, more, more! And if you are wondering how the Cirque de Soleil manages to turn a bunch of old songs into a 90 minute spectacle, you will just have to go see it for yourself.

Forget Fashion Show Mall. What kind of a name is that anyway? The future of shopping in America is the outlet mall. I am proud to say that early this month I had my first outlet experience and it left me feeling more energized and full of glee (yes, glee) than an espresso on an empty stomach or a semi-annual sale at Tod’s. Sure I had heard tales of friends venturing across the border to a Coach or Burberry outlet, but I just assumed that the stores would be full of unsightly rejects from their flagships. I have now seen the error of my ways and am turned outlet apostle. The Premium Outlets in Las Vegas has stores from almost every major designer under the sun, including Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, David Yurman and Jimmy Choo. You really will feel like a kid in a candy store! So what are you waiting for?

QUOTING FASHION

Some of the best feelings I experience are the result of reading or hearing someone say something so spot-on, so fabulous, so true that my mind is left feeling light, happy, and excited. A few months ago this happened as I was perusing Style.com for my daily fashion fix and stumbled upon a video profile of my sole-mate, Christian Louboutin.

Like many other females I have always wondered why no one has yet to make (at least as far as I know) a comfortable high-heel. As I graduated from chunky heels in my teens to designer stilettos in my twenties, I was under the illusion that paying several hundred dollars for a pair of designer heels would mean that they would be less painful. My sore arches and blisters disagree. And this was all very frustrating until Mr. Louboutin shared a few simple truths with me. He described his aim: "I wanted to do shoes that are really just for seduction, for pleasure, for sex. That's it! A shoe you cannot run, cannot even walk. You want to run in a shoe, buy sneekers."

So there you have it. High heels were never meant to be comortable. They are meant for taxis, dinners and seduction. They exist to make women look beautiful, sexy, and alluring. I love it! Isn't the truth liberating?

And one more thing. I would just like to say that I find it really upsetting that lower-end footwear manufacturers not only copy Mr. Louboutin's time-consuming designs to the T, but they have also started to paint their soles that same trademark shade of red! So please support the true designers by saying no to the newest trend in counterfeit fashion, knock-off shoes. Pay homage to the holy trinity of shoes: Manolo, Choo and Louboutin.

PICKS OF THE MONTH - PARIS

Picture a Frenchman and he will probably be wearing a beret and loafers, with a baguette tucked under his arm, a bottle of red wine in his left hand and a cigarette in the right. France may have recently banned smoking in restaurants and cafes, but the government will not be able to remove smoking from French culture. My favourite smoky cafe in Paris is none other than Le Fumoir, just two minutes from the Louvre on the Right Bank. Filled with cosy leather chairs, a chic atmosphere and a library of books to entertain coffee drinkers, this place has that unexplainable Parisian “je ne sais quoi.” It is a perfect place to meet with a friend on a cold, winter’s afternoon and chat for hours over a hot Irish coffee and some pastry.

One of my most Parisian experiences occurred on a cold autumn evening when I met a friend for drinks at the bar lounge of the lovely Hotel Lutetia on the left bank. Probably the largest and fanciest hotel on this side of the Seine, the Lutetia is a posh hotel built in the beautiful Haussmann style that has come to represent the classic style of Parisian architecture generally shown in Hollywood movies and American guidebooks. The lounge is spacious, comfortable, chic and ornately decorated, complete with a musician playing jazz on a grand piano.

On this first visit of mine to the lounge, the room was filled with chic Parisians of all sorts: trendy college girls, a young family, couples, business acquaintances, a young man with his grandmother and, the most charming of all - two old gentlemen chatting on a sofa, dressed in their best suits, smoking cigars and drinking aperitifs, with two greyhounds laying peacefully at their feet. The picture could not have been more perfect. And as my Parisian friend pointed out, the whole image was just so very Saint Germain des Pres. So on a cool or rainy evening in the city of lights, what better way is there to spend it than indoors in heavenly surrounding, sipping a casual cocktail with family, a close friend or a good book. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the moment.

Vancouver isn’t generally considered a major player on the international stage. It doesn’t dominate in world politics, big business or the arts. However there are categories with which my city dominates all others: nature and outdoor sports? No. How about Aboriginal culture and logging? Wrong again. The correct answer is Starbucks and sushi. The Arabs may have one thousand and one nights but we have 1001 sushi bars. It is true that one cannot go for more than a block or two without stumbling upon another Starbucks and sushi restaurant (or ten). Vancouver has the best, the cheapest and the most abundant supply of sushi in the world. It even beats out Japan in this category. Thanks to our healthy lifestyle, multicultural community and access to fresh, affordable seafood, sushi has become a phenomenon in Vancouver – a trend that is here to stay.

My favourite Japanese sushi restaurant in the city is Honjin in North Vancouver, just near the Sea Bus. There is a second location in Yaletown for the downtown crowd. In my opinion it is one of the very best sushi restaurants in town. Honjin serves up all the traditional Japanese food we adore, plus an assortment of their own concoctions. Try the North Shore Roll. It’s amazing! In any case, this place is an absolute must. If you want to be sure to get a table, call that same day to make reservation. I guarantee that it is worth the effort!

Every so often I discover a new shop that sends my pulse racing. Usually this occurs as a product of spectacular footwear or playful spring dresses just begging to come home with me. One discovery set itself apart, the uber fabulous Chintz & Company, a home furnishings and accessories store in Vancouver’s ultra hip Yaletown district. Filled with chic, beautiful items at reasonable places, every visit to Chintz leaves me on the verge of wanting to buy an apartment just so I have an excuse to decorate. Whether you fall head over heels for a set of dishes, an armchair or a garden statue, it is virtually impossible to part from the store empty-handed.

Regardless of my whereabouts in the world I long to be chez Alacazar. Pourquoi? For starters, their tartare au boeuf (served Tuesdays) is, in my opinion, the best on the planet...and I have had my share of steak tartare. Not to mention that their frites are delectable and cappuccino, served with chocolate covered orange slices, is my favorite in France. No they don't skimp on the foam and only the real ingredients will do. Nicole Kidman was willing to temporarily forego her skim milk-only policy for the Alcazar experience. Located in an airy, modern space (once the infamous Alcazar Cabaret), and decorated tastefully with fresh flowers, the service is good and everything on the menu is tres magnifique. There is a hip lounge upstairs for in the evenings and a chic club down below.

Mecca may be a place of pilgrimage to believers in Islam, but to those who pray to the Gods of Fashion, Colette is the place spiritual worshipers call home. It may take a few visits to appreciate the brilliance of this concept store, with its water bar, book collection and eclectic mix of (0ften rare) high fashion clothing and accessories. Not only is each piece handpicked from the designer showrooms to fit in with the Colette image, the boutique has become so revered that designers frequently design special pieces just for the store. And you never know who you are going to get to see...Monsieur Lagerfeld may be just around the corner.

The word Paris is synonymous with style, elegance and luxury, so it comes as no surprise that visitors to the city of lights will want to brush up on their knowledge of la mode - museum style. For other some visitors to the epicentre of fashion, merely meandering through the city's endless stream of boutiques will not suffice. So, in order to preserve Paris's rich textile history, the Musée Galliera was created out of an old palace to store and preserve thousands upon thousands of pieces of clothing.

Its vast collection ranges from Dior's Fall 2007 Haute Couture gown and Katharine Hepburn's trousers to Marie Antoinette's culottes. Although the majority of its gems remain carefully stored away from the eyes of gawking tourists, every year the museum puts on a few special exhibitions, where hundreds of pieces are put on display for the public. All done to perfection, past exhibitions include Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Marlene Dietrich and the history of French fashion. Currently the museum is holding an exhibition about fashion from the roaring twenties that should prove to be a must-see. Aside from a stop at Colette, no fashionista's pilgrimage to the land of fashion is complete without a stop at the Musée Galliera.

Next time you are in the neighborhood, spend some time back in the 1800s strolling through the wonderfully maintained rooms of London's most beautiful department store.

When you are lucky enough to be in a city with a world-class art scene, my God, get thee to a theatre! London plays host to some of the best theatre, opera, ballet, visual art and musicals in the world and it would be a shame to visit the city without taking advantage of all it has to offer. As I live in a city where performance are rarely worth their large entry prices, I love to see a good ballet at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden whenever I visit London. Home to some of the best ballet on earth, the ROH is a beautiful old opera house dating back to the 18th century, located in the Covent Garden district downtown London. Ticket prices may be steep, but in my opinion they are worth every penny. For an incredible experience you will treasure for the rest of your life, splurge on a classical ballet next time you are in London.

No visit to the land of fish & chips and bangers & mash is complete without an evening spent at one of the city's hundreds of charming, cosy pubs. Traveling in London on a budget, I figured I was doomed to mushy, inedible, overpriced "food", until a fellow traveler enlightened me to the world of pub grub. A great place to catch the game or chat with locals, the food in pubs is generally pretty tasty and the price is unbeatable. Seek refuge from a cold, rainy Autumn evening and enjoy a pint or three with some friends, English-style.

Every evening around 8pm, like clockwork, a little voice inside my head whispers: a slice of pie would be really great right now. But not just any pie will do - it can only be from the uber popular Savary Island Pie Company in West Vancouver. Just looking at their selection of cakes and pastries makes me melt. Their products are made with natural ingredients, fresh organic fruits and loving care, which is why their pies are in a different league from the store-bought versions. The Savary Island Pie Company doubles as a coffee shop so you can eat in or take a couple of slices to go. My personal favorite is their raspberry rhubarb pie, which is, in my opinion, the most delicious dessert in town!

Why is it that whenever you ask one of your fellow fashionistas where she got that fabulous pair of shoes or bag she names some foreign city that you won't be visiting any time soon? Oliver Barret, a small independent boutique at Park Royal in West Vancouver is the solution we've been waiting for. The store carries a variety of the hippest, latest brands from London, Paris, L.A. and New York. The girls that work there are super nice and trendy and, unlike most other stores, they are asked to recommend new labels for the store to carry, which keeps the merchandise fresh and exciting. The boutique often carries popular brands from foreign countries rarely seen in Vancouver. Next time you decide to add a little flavour to your wardrobe, Oliver Barret is the place to be.

Let's face it, Vancouver isn't exactly a cultural mecca. Sure we have an abundance of nature, outdoor recreation, nature, restaurants, shops and (believe it or not) nature, but when it comes to satisfying our artistic appetite, this city leaves you unfulfilled. Thank God for the Museum of Anthropology, located at the University of British Columbia. History enthusiasts and tourists can soak up the culture at this beautifully museum designed by famed Canadian architect, Arthur Erickson. The Museum showcases several hundred years worth of First Nations art, history and mythology. On a rainy Vancouver afternoon, of which there are many, the museum is a great place for taking pictures of Indian carvings, hearing the secret stories of the totem poles, learning about First Nations history and understanding ancient cultures. It may not be filled with crown jewels or Caravaggios but it is a great place for all ages. If you visit one museum while in Vancouver, make it this one!

The first time I tried to go to Le Pamphlet I foolishly showed up without a reservation. I was told that there would be a table available in 3 hours (at 10pm) so, with nothing better to do than wander the streets of the Marais for hours on this summer evening, I accepted. In a city full of culinary masterpieces, I wondered if this little hole in the wall could actually be worth the wait? Absolument! Le Pamphlet is probably my favorite restaurant in all of Paris. Sure the staff is friendly and the chef is charming, but the bottom line is that the food is to die for. Each course is a sensation for the senses or what the French would call divine. The home-made terrine de canard is the best I have tasted. Just make sure to reserve a few days in advance to avoid une grande tristesse.

As fun and glamorous as the Hotel Costes or the Buddha Bar can be, sometimes a girl just wants to put on an old pair of jeans, some comfy shoes and a dab of lip gloss and meet up with her friends at a smoky little cave where pretentiousness is a cocktail and cigarettes are an accessory. For a casual night out on the town, amazing sangria and a very French drinking experience, le Bar Dix on the Left Bank is the place to be.

For a few euros, city dwellers can enjoy a picnic and good book in the jardin of famous French artist Auguste Rodin. With a grand hotel particulier (now the Musée Rodin) presiding over the grounds, it feels like you are simply enjoying an afternoon on your private estate. There may be others around, but it still feels like your own special little place.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! When you can't decide between ice cream, fruit and chocolate for dessert, Marble Slab may just be the answer to all your problems. Step 1: choose an ice cream flavour or 2. Let's say a scoop of cheesecake and another of cookie dough. Step 2: Select your toppings. They range from fruit, bits of chocolate bars, gummy bears and nuts. You pick the strawberries. Next, your server places your ice cream on a frozen marble slab (so it doesn't melt) and mix your toppings completely together. Step 3: Choose your cone. They come in traditional cone as well as cup shapes, and their tops are dipped in various types of chocolate. The butterfinger waffle cone is absolutely delish! Step 4: eat your heart out! The mixture of flavors is worth the wait - there is the occasional lineup at peak times. Bon appétit!

It may not look like much from the street, but this petit restaurant is as good as they come. With current chef Stéphane Jégo (left) at the helm, this little hole in the wall is packed day in and out. I will admit that this is not entirely due to Stéphane's flirtatious charm, although I do bid any women who enters this establishment fair warning - his creative dishes are simply divine. What's more, a three course a la carte meal (wine not included) can be had for about 30 euros. Be sure to make a reservation several days in advance because Paris' best kept secret is out.

Where does one go on a lazy Sunday afternoon in Paris? But of course! To the Jardin de Luxembourg, bien sure! Situated just north of Saint Germain des Pres on Paris' left bank is a breathtaking, not to mention gigantic, French-style park. With fountains, manicured lawns, flowers, tennis courts, pony rides and even a little chateau, a visit to the jardin is a quintessential part of the Parisian lifestyle. Read a book in one of the many chairs scattered around the main fountain and watch the impeccably dressed French children push their wooden boats across the water or take in a musical concert by the bandstand on a Sunday afternoon.

Vancouver is probably the best city in the world for sushi. With its large Japanese community and fresh seafood, its sushi and sashimi reign supreme, not only in quality but also in price. One of my special places for sushi, especially when I have worked up an appetite, is Shabusen - located right in the heart of downtown Vancouver. For a little over $20 you can get the All You Can Eat menu, which means as much sushi, sashimi, gomae, spring rolls, edamame, etc. as you like. They also have a Korean BBQ grill set up on each table, so you can order fish and meat to cook on the grill, as part of the AYCE menu. For lunch , the AYCE menu costs only $13.50 but it doesn't include the BBQ portion that they offer for dinner. And for those who can't eat their money's worth, you can also order from their a-la carte menu. I suggest making a reservation in the evenings, especially for larger parties, to make sure you get a spot. The place is popular. If you're lucky you may even spot a celebrity or two. Sarah Michelle Geller likes to eat here when she's in town. So save your appetite to take maximum advantage of this Japanese feast - Vancouver style.

Chic locals of all ages and tourists alike monopolize this picturesque café in the 7th arrondissement, just around the corner from the Champs de Mars and the Eiffel Tower. Leave the Jules Verne to Tom and Katie - those in the know gather at Café du Marché for some of the best traditional French cuisine in Paris. With dishes like steak tartare and Salade Niçoise, as well as desserts and good wine served at lunch and dinner, the place fills up quickly so get there early (let's say around 8pm - early by French standards). On a warm, sunny day tiny tables line the sidewalk of rue Cler, filled with fashionable students, middle-aged hippies, smart businessmen, old lovers and American families traveling à la Rick Steves (who also happens to be an avid promoter of this restaurant. I've even spotted him there once or twice).

Their Confit de Canard is the best I have ever tasted and their riz-au-lait (rice pudding) is always a requisite follow-up after my main course. I find myself often heading to the café when I am in Paris and can't be bothered to cook. Breakfast, such as a café au lait and croissant, is always enjoyable and provides for some great people watching. Prices also happen to be very affordable, which is probably the reason for its diverse clientelle. And just in case the place sounds too perfect to be..well, French...note that it is closed Sundays for dinner, so you will just have to head to Ladurée for pastry instead.

Cultural Activity: Salsa by the Seine

What makes Paris so special? The grumpy waiters, the daily strikes or the endless supply of puppy poop? Well perhaps for some. But for many people I suspect Paris' alluring appeal to be the constant variety of cultural and social events put on throughout the city and the often small cost to participate in these activities.

One such event is what I like to call Salsa by the Seine. In the Summer months, twice a week in the evening, an open large salsa class is held on the quai of the left bank in the 5th arrondissement (starting around 7:30pm depending on the night). Taught by a reputable instructor and with Latin music blaring in the background, anyone who shows up can join in for a quick lesson in salsa 101. And best of all: it doesn't cost a thing! Following the lesson, everyone from the salsa 101 students to ballroom aficionados gather for a massive Latin dance fest under the stars. Crowded, yes, but then no one will be the wiser when you accidentally trod on your partner's toes. Come early with some friends and a picnic and make a night of it. Who said Paris was expensive?

Marie Antoinette may have lost her head years ago but I say: Long live the Queen! For it is she who reigns over Paris' party scene today. But there's no need to get one's revolutionary muskets in a knot, this Queen just happens to be the hot gay nightclub nestled on the Champs Elysées.

Although frequented by the city's large gay community, it is a big nightclub that exists for everyone to enjoy - sexual orientation being a non-issue. It is a place where straight and gay can gather side by side for a long night of booty-shaking, cocktail guzzling and fun. Weekends are very popular as are Wednesdays, its token ladies' night where women get in for free. Le Queen is fun for everyone and has become quite the clubbing institution among young Parisians. If unsure where to go out at night in Paris, I recommend popping by her majesty, the Queen. And to anyone who feels above this experience, well...let them eat cake!

Who said eating in London had to be expensive? Next time you would like a unique and exciting lunch experience without blowing your budget, head to Belgo. Belgo Centraal is a large Belgian restaurant, with an atmosphere that combines medieval Europe with the 21st century. Situated mainly underground, the place is filled with post-industrial glass, stainless steel, and a large open kitchen. Guests are seated at large tables with benches and are served by waiters dressed as Belgian monks. The restaurant boasts one of the largest selections of beer in England, with a wide variety of lager, fruit-flavored beers and anything else you can think up.

For between 6.50-8.50 pounds you can get a hearty lunch, such as steak frites or a bowl of mussels, and a lager, glass of wine or soft drink. Other meals, particularly at dinner time, will cost you more, but nothing unreasonable. The food is very tasty and is definitely good value for your money. Also to note: the bathrooms are very original (and unisex) so don't forget to pay them a visit and children eat for free!

Cosmopolitan fashionistas head to Karen Millen for simple yet elegant citywear with a slight edge. Carrying both casual and dressy outfits, the clothing is well-fitted, made of rich fabrics and tailed to hug the female body. With middle of the range prices (think Banana Republic), this label is great for buying a few key pieces, such as a great coat, a pair of capris or an evening dress.

Did you ever wonder what happened to the wicked Witch of the West to make her so darn wicked? Well, maybe not...but here's your chance to find out. Wicked is the Tony award-winning musical about the "good" witch and the "bad" witch from the Wizard of Oz. Funny, original, and extremely well-done, it'll have you humming its catchy tunes for at least the next few weeks. The music is fantastic so save some space on your ipod. The theatre is right by Victoria station, which should make getting to and from the show a breeze. If you see one musical on your next trip to London, without a doubt it should be this one!

ÉDITION VANCOUVER: CELEBRATING A NATION

This Sunday July 1st Canadians everywhere will unite in pride for their country. Canada has become a nation known for its open-mind, cultural diversity, breathtaking scenery and peaceful nature. July 1st we celebrate Canada Day.

Throughout Vancouver there will be a series of events from morning to night, including concerts, dancing, exhibitions and fireworks. The main hub for the festivities will be Canada Place, our exhibition centre located under the giant sails that jet out over the cosy inlet. This spot is home to some of the best views of Stanley Park, the small bay and the North Shore mountains.

Once the sun sets, the annual fireworks extravaganza will crown the day's events. It takes place in English Bay so come early with some friends and have a picnic on the beach to ensure a good spot for the show. Dress warmly for at night and plan for large crowds and some walking once the show is over. For a more luxurious experience, watch the fireworks while on a dinner cruise around the bay.

ÉDITION PARIS: HAPPY FETE DE LA MUSIQUE

Every June 21st several countries around the world celebrate the arrival of summer with Fete de la Musique. It is a celebration of music spanning all cultures and ages. Countries that participate in this global party organize free music concerts and exhibitions in every village, city and town. From morning to midnight, the streets of major cities are lined with musicians (anyone can participate), entertaining the locals in parks, pubs, castles and historical monuments.

France is one of Fete de la Musique's biggest supporters - the entire country is engulfed in the vibrant celebrations. If you are lucky enough to be in France, particularly in its capital, on June 21st, forget Orsay, Notre Dame and Hermes - spend the day strolling through the streets taking in the diverse little concerts you stumble upon. Try some reggae, classical, rock, salsa, African or Arabic. Then dance the night away under the stars to some jazz in a narrow cobblestone side street.

Possibly the biggest concert put on for Fete de la musique is the big show put on by TV5. It lasts about 4 hours and has performances by most of France's most popular musicians of the time as well as the odd international superstar, such as Celine Dion, the Pussycat Dolls and Eros Ramazzotti. It always occurs at some very famous, humongous venue that can accommodate the couple hundred thousand people who attend every year. Past locations include the Trocadero, the Champs de Mars (Eiffel Tower) and Versailles.

Having been a couple times, I can tell you that the concert is fantastic, especially if you are a fan of some of the performers. However, people can be very pushy up closer to the stage and, like any other large public gathering, there are the occasional "weirdos" out and about. Think mosh-pit. Still there is always lots of security to make sure that things are kept under control. For safety reasons, the few closest metro stations to this venue are generally closed for the night so prepare for a bit of a walk home. The nearest open ones are so crowded they make the Tokyo subway look deserted.

ÉDITION PARIS: WHERE HAVE ALL THE GIRLS GONE?

Twice a year something very strange happens in Paris: its entire female population seems to disappear. It is early in the day, but this morning they do not sit in cafes enjoying their ritual croissant, they have not shown up for work. All of a sudden you see a French woman dash by in a hurry and so you decide to follow her. As you turn a corner onto Avenue Montagne a great wind of eau de parfum engulfs you as you discover an incredible mass of girls lined up outside Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada. Mystery solved....the semi-annual French Sales have begun!

Every January and June all of France seems to go on sale. Known as the "Soldes" to the French, they last about a month and a half and are restricted by the government. In general, stores in France are only allowed to have sales during these two periods, at which time everything from the previous 6 months goes on sale. And this isn't just everyday labels such as Guess, Zara or the Gap. Everything from Dior to Christian Louboutin to Burberry can be had for at least 30% off (most of the time). This means clothes, shoes, bags, jewelery, accessories, houseware, books, etc.

If you are lucky enough to be in Paris (or anywhere in France) during the Soldes and you enjoy spending on some of the finer things in life, carpe diem and go nuts. If you are planning to buy several designer items (especially on a trip to Europe) it is worth planning your trip around these dates for the savings alone. Designer clothes and accessories are much cheaper in Europe, particularly during the sales. ie. Miu Miu patent leather mary janes 260 euros incl. tax in Paris vs. $540 CAN at Holt Renfrew in Canada not incl 14% tax.

This June the sales start on the 27th. If you have something specific in mind, hit the soldes early. If not, the discounts only get better as the time goes on. For designer handbags and other hot items, I definitely recommend lining up outside the stores at least an hour before they open so you can get first dibs (they only let a few people in at a time because things can sometimes get a little out of control). It also helps if you don't go to the flagship of these stores since that is were everyone else will be. For example, I was told at the Gucci accessories store at 350 Rue Saint Honoré (75001 Paris tel 33.1.42968327) that almost everyone goes to the other Gucci stores on the first day so this location is not nearly as busy. It is the best store to go to for the first few days of the sales.

Last but not least, when you spend at least 175 euros in one day at one store you qualify to get some of the tax back. Just get the cashier to fill out the "détaxe" form and show them your passport (it's very important to bring your passport with you when shopping) and then you can collect the tax back at the airport when you fly home. It really adds up and is another reason why it is often cheaper to shop in France than at home.

So to you who just happen to be in France in June 27th, shop till you drop!

This restaurant/bar/cafe also happens to be an art gallery. An incredibly original venue, it has become known as a destination for art, music, food and drinks. Sketch is definitely one of my favorite places to go whenever I am in London. Although some of the dishes are quite pricey, a delicious little afternoon tea in "the parlour" can fit into anyone's budget at around £7.50 per person. P.S. the toilets in themselves are worth the visit.

As a self-proclaimed ballerina-slipper-aholic with several pairs of my own, I can say that French Sole are by far the nicest, most comfortable, good quality ballerina shoes out there. Forget Repetto and all the other big names, with super soft leather and every style imaginable, it is no wonder that they are also a favorite of Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Mischa Barton, Lindsay Lohan, Joss Stone....and the list goes on.

Cultural Visit: The Wallace Collection

The museum's website describes the Wallace Collection as "a national museum in an historic London town house. In 25 galleries are unsurpassed displays of French 18th century painting, furniture and porcelain with superb Old Master paintings and a world class armoury." My personal favorites are the several large paintings by roccoco painter François Boucher. There is also a lovely restaurant in a covered courtyard at the centre of the house.

Possibly the best value in town, this friendly little restaurant serves up a creative, delicious three-course meal for 30 euros per person. Packed nightly with both locals and tourists, I definitely recommend making a reservation at least a few days in advance.

Cafe: Cafe de Flore

Contrary to common belief, this internationally renowned cafe is not just populated by hoards of tourists; it is also a favourite hangout of Parisians. Famous for its past patrons, such as Sartre and de Beauvoir, it is great for people watching, reading a good book or meeting up with old friends. If you are lucky you may even catch a glimse of Karl Lagerfeld, who has been known to go there for a late coffee or an early breakfast.

Club/Lounge/Bar: Mandala Ray

This restaurant, and lounge-turned-club at night, is known for good food, its hip decor modeled after a buddhist temple and its fashionable crowd. It costs around 20 euros to get in once it switches into a club, but if you are already inside for dinner or a drink, then you do not have to pay a cover charge.

Created by a Canadian designer and her entrepreneur husband, this young, elegant, flirtatious label creates classic pieces with a modern twist. No french girl's wardrobe is complete without a few pieces from this designer (and neither is mine). Tara Jarmon outfits also cost significantly less in France than they do in many other boutiques abroad, especially in North America.

Cultural Visit: the Paris Ballet at Opera Garnier

Opera Garnier is probably my most beloved place in all of Paris. I like to walk up its grand staircase and through its ornate corridors as if I were back in the 19th century, surrounded by women in layered ballgowns and gentlemen in tophats. The ballet and opera here are world-class and definitely worth seeing, but if you aren't able to attend, visitors are still able to tour the opera house. Students can often purchase rush tickets right before a show for very cheap. They usually are for seats with limited visibility, but they still provide the opportunity to hear incredible music in a superb location. The Paris opera also happens to be the inspiration for the Phantom of the Opera, so keep an eye out for any hints of its mysterious past as you explore the interiors.

In my opinion the best pizza in town. I might even dare to say some of the best pizza I have tasted outside of Italy. Traditionally-made, quick yet delicious food makes Sciue a favorite among the trendy downtown business crowd as well as anyone else who ventures in. It also makes a great capuccino and has an large outdoor patio for eating in the summer.

Definitely one of Vancouver's nicest clubs/lounges, Bar None attracts a slightly more upscale crowd than many of the city's other nightclubs. Dress nicely, order some cocktails from the bar and hit the dancefloor.

The revamped new Holt Renfrew just reopened its doors to Vancouver's fashionistas at the beginning of June. With modern blown-glass installations and a bright atrium at the center of the store, this retailer has created a backdrop for its designer labels that would rival any of its competitors on the international scene. Carrying lines ranging from Chanel to Prada to Tory Burch, "Holts" has established itself as the city's premiere provider of designer fashions. And soon they will be opening a beautiful roof-top restaurant as well so we fashion-aholics will have absolutely no excuse for having to leave the shop for a quick bite to eat.

Cultural Visit: a Shakespearean play at Bard on the Beach

Bard on the Beach has now been running for 18 years and every year is better than the last. Set in theatre tents in a park alongside the ocean, the plays here are world-class to say the least. Produced under the watchful eye of founder, artistic director and altogether brilliant showman Christopher Gaze (who has become somewhat of a local celebrity of the years), the productions are original, show great attention to detail and radiate with talent. I would recommend this year's The Taming of the Shrew, which just happens to be set in the wild west - the entire crowd roared with laughter from beginning to end and so will you.

Travel Tip of the Month:

Always keep your purse or bag zipped shut, keeping the zipper pull in front of you so that it stays in your line of sight. If you carry a backpack, fanny pack or open bag/purse, you are making yourself a target for pit pockets. Don't be fooled by nice surroundings and fancy neighborhoods - you can never be too careful!

My personal favorite for traveling (and for at home) is my medium-sized Pliage purse from Longchamp. It goes with everything and is suitable during almost any occasion, it can fit all your belonging required for a day of sightseeing, it is easy to keep clean and it folds small for in your suitcase. Mine has paid for itself a dozen times over. It also just happens to be the perpetual it-bag for the modern french woman.
